The trunk test is a usability test proposed be Steve Krug, author of the book “Don’t make me think”.
He asks us to imagine being blindfolded and stuffed into the trunk of a car. On running up on a web page imagine a quick peak around the blindfold and through a crack in the trunk. Did you locate all of the required navigation components?
My boyfriend did a trunk test on my websites Interaction Design sub-page and these are the results:
- Site ID (What site is this?) Easily located
- Page Name (Where am I?) Easily located
- Sections (Are the sites major sections outlined?) Yes, they are in the menu.
- Local Navigation I can click links and use the menu
- Where am I (is there a “You are here?) Yes, in the menu I can see that I am located in the ITU-section
I also did a think-loud test where I asked the person to find a few things on my site. Here are the results:
Find the exam from Media and Communication. Found fast, but that is probably because he knows I go to ITU.
Find the place, where it says what this blog is about. Found relatively fast, though took a detour around home before hitting the about menu.
Find a project on the site. Found fast under Portfolio
Find the personal part of the website. Speakers Corner, intuitively, Found fast
Find the ideas that I have for changed I want to make to the blog. Found fast in Ideas under Changelog
Comments from the tests:
I don’t think the links are visible enough. (They were dark brown and blended in with the text)
I probably wouldn’t know what ITU was if I didn’t know you in person.
I took both of these into account, and wrote a little bit on ITU, in the menu “ITU”. I tried to change the links, but making the font-size bigger made it too big, so I ended up giving it a brigther color instead, which helped a lot.

This is the basic layout of the page. I would like posted photos to cast a shadow. As if lightsource on the entire page is in the upper left corner.

This is the very poor scan of my new site blueprint, along with some thoughts for what plugins I will need.

This is the overall design of the About page. Minus the tree, which does not belong on the About page but on the ChangeLog page.
First About Me, then about ITU, then about the Blog.

This is the MockUp of the Home page. I would like there to be a welcoming message, a video presentation of the blog, the “featured content” plugin, which shows random pictures from the blog, the latest post(big), and some of the latest posts(small). Don’t know how many yet, but not a lot.

This is the MockUp for the ITU section of the site. It will have a dropdown menu with the classes. Later it will have a “earlier classes” option as well.
First the page will display the class name, then some short information about the class. It will also have a link to the Feed from the course blog.
Then comes all the assignments ordered by month so the latest is at the top.
Then a journal for that class.

This is the idea I have for all the headers, each menu item will have its own symbol on the header. I don’t know what to put on the Home page yet. Additional Page “the Corner” will have a loudspeaker as symbol.

This is just a test of how this color would look.
I would like for there to be some color on the Header, but not too much because it will demand attention which should be directed at the content. Also not too little because then it will just be boring black and white.

This is more of the final mockup.. still no colors though..

I’m seriously thinking about letting each page in the menu have it’s own icon..
This is the icon for the about page. Possibly also the home page, however with moderations.
(I sketched over a picture of myself really quickly, got the idea form the “Buxton: Sketching user experiences” book we are reading in Interaction Design)

So this is an idea for a look for this blog.
This is the boring first version – the real version is going to have more color.
It shows the About page. You can tell because the About-link in the menubar is yellow.

must be changed! I’m thinking maybe a sort of darkish-tan-curry-yellow.

Learn how to resize the pictures you put on your blog. And find out where it is best to get them from? (probably not the temporary photobucket sollution).
